West Cork Gigs -> About Us

We're a bunch of West Cork folk who want to bring some sort of music scene to the area. Yeah, there's great venues around like Connolly's of Leap and De Barra's but there aren't a whole pile of local, young bands playing regularly or all ages gigs for that matter! So we've set out to make a difference.

We organised an all-ages battle of the bands in Skibbereen GAA Pavilion in May, featuring five local bands - Remedy, The Horny Devils, Resonance, The Civilians and Tequila Mockingbird - and headliners, The Impressionists from Ballincollig who won the All-Ireland Blast:Beat finals. It was a great success with over 300 people in the crowd, raising over €2,000 for Meningitis Research Ireland.

Our second All-Ages Battle of the Bands, again in Skibb's Pav, had a slightly heavier vibe. Mist of Fury, Sunsetter, 11s Laughing, Eat the Dots and Burn us Both competed. Bantry band, Burn us Both claimed the prize of a 10-hour recording session with local musician, Donagh Long. Tequila Mockingbird returned to Skibb as special guests and provided some final entertainment.

Sick of all the gig-less months we'd suffered during 6th year, we decided to go ahead and have another. This time we had four Skibb bands - The Horny Devils, Firing Blanks, Shrapnel and Plans on Hands - as well as Clonakilty band, Spitvalve.

With the Leaving Cert. over and done with we organised our fourth gig, again in Skibb GAA Pavilion, on Saturday, August 11th. The Anybodies, Public Secrets, The Last Order and Nice Guy Eddie battled it out in the BOTB, with Public Secrets winning the grand prize of a recording session with The Music Watchtower in Clonakilty. Limerick band, Vesta Varro, fresh from the release of their debut album, "Exit Here," headlined.

To get 2008 off to a flying start, we've decided to do another charity gig, again for Meningitis Research Ireland. It's a very worthy cause and this particular charity means a lot to us as a friend of ours died from meningitis in 2003. So what better way is there to raise money and have a bit of craic than having an all-ages gig?On the night of Saturday, January 19th in Skibbereen GAA Pavilion, Acoustic Solution, Who's Ray, The Calibre, Snowman and headliners, Hope Is Noise, graced the stage. A great night was had!!
